You can’t have failed to notice the international focus on climate change that’s going on at the moment. If last year was all about realising that recycling is something we should all be doing then 2019 is the year of action!

This week - between 23rd and 29th September - we’re supporting Recycle Week, here at Playforce.

Now in its 17th year, Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling, organised by WRAP under the Recycle Now brand. The aim of the week is to encourage the public to recycle more, by demonstrating the benefits of recycling items from all around the home.

This year’s theme will be: ‘Recycling. It’s in our own hands.’

But what does this mean in practical terms?

First of all, we’ve set out our pledges to focus on the environment here at Playforce HQ. You can read more about these here. These include a pledge to replace individual desk bins with larger central recycling points to encourage recycling of paper, plastics and metal.

We also, recently, published a blog with teaching ideas for learning about the environment. You can read this here. In addition to this we really love the resource pack that WRAP has produced, which accompanies their film library. The pack contains a wide range of classroom activities linked to the KS1 and KS2, English, Mathematics and Science curriculum, that can be used to encourage children to think differently about waste and recycling.

As expected, TES has some amazing resources too - https://www.tes.com/resources/search/?&q=recycling - as do our friends at Twinkl - https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resources/topics/eco-recycling-environment

Finally, here are our top three products that have recycling firmly fixed in mind… and they’re super simple to introduce at your school this year.

  • Giant School Composter - This introduces children to nature’s recycling process, growth and decay. Two large doors on the top enable you to add bulky organic waste and a hatch allows easy access to compost at the base.

  • Upcycled Mud Kitchen - This award-winning product, exclusively from Playforce is made from recycled timber and includes a sink and hob. The recycled timber and tap means that each Mud Kitchen is slightly different.

  • Fun Grow Planter - Constructed from play-grade sanded timber this high quality rectangular planter bed can be used for growing a variety of plants and vegetables, using your own compost and even cuttings taken from other plants. This planter is also available in a square configuration, as a taller seating planter option or using natural bark sleepers.
