outstanding outdoor spaces

Queens Road Primary School, Cheshire

The children at Queens Road Primary School can get up and close with their beautiful rural surroundings in their new outdoor classroom.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

At Queens Road Primary School we are in a lovely rural area with fantastic views. We wanted to develop our playground so that the surrounding area could be admired at all times of year. We also wanted to ensure that the children had a space where their learning could be taken outside and a place where parents could wait at the end of school.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The equipment that Playforce provides is of the highest quality and the knowledgeable staff knew exactly how to achieve our desired plans. The team were keen to make our outdoor classroom blend perfectly into the environment and take advantage of the rural surroundings. Playforce made sure we were up-to-date at all stages of the development and we were able to add our own ideas at any time.

We’ve noticed the children have become much more attentive in class and have used the outdoors as inspiration for classroom activities.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The outdoor classroom has two main uses at Queens Road Primary School. Practically it is a good space where parents can wait, come rain or shine, to collect their children from the school. For the children it acts as a space where they can take part in outdoor learning or just relax and have a quiet chat. The space is so peaceful and private – perfect for lessons in a unique environment.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children love the new outdoor classroom and are always looking for an excuse to head outside. Not all of the pupils love sports and those that don’t aren’t left out as the classroom acts as the perfect platform for spectators. We’ve noticed the children have become much more attentive in class and have used the outdoors as inspiration for classroom activities.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

It is worth doing some research to find out if you can receive any grants or donations for your development. The money for our playground equipment came from the Local Education Authority outdoor classroom grant, geared towards encouraging children to adopt a healthy and safe lifestyle.
