outstanding outdoor spaces

Holme Slack Community Primary School

Helen Wilson, from Holme Slack Community Primary School, tell us about their latest playground design process, and how their pupils are now enjoying the benefits of an engaging play environment for break times, as well as to reward attendance and focus on small intervention focus groups.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
Before Playforce came on board our playground was a blank canvas, with no fixed equipment or focus areas. We wanted to develop the space to keep pupils active and encourage creativity.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
Playforce we able to support us with finding suitable funding and grant opportunities and advised us through the process of securing funding - without this we would not have been able to create the playground space we have now.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
We currently use the outdoor space at break times and lunch times, and the Drama Club are using the outdoor stage area to enhance their rehearsals and productions.
When the weather improves then the stage and seating will be used as an outdoor classroom and the Tipi and Creative Drawing Trail will be used for small intervention focus groups such as phonics boosters.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children look forward to going out to play and the equipment can also be used as an incentive. It is now being linked to rewards for other areas, for example to reward high levels of attendance.
Any other comments about your experience of working with Playforce?
The Playforce staff were very professional staff, with excellent knowledge - we would be happy to recommend them to other schools looking to develop their playgrounds.
