outstanding outdoor spaces

Cuddington Primary School, Cheshire

The old playground at Cuddington Primary School was beginning to look outdated and Headteacher Yvonne Elliot wanted to create an outdoor classroom for learning and play. She tells us how the children have benefited from their new space.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our old Early Years playground was developed in 2003 and was outdated and not at all exciting for the children. We wanted to erect a canopy to allow outdoor access in all weathers and provide the staff and pupils with an interesting and inspirational environment to support learning.

What were they key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce were quick to respond to our first query and took great care to make sure they understood what we wanted to achieve. The consultant listened carefully to our ideas and wishes and, from these, created a detailed and excellent plan. The prices were very competitive and the quality fantastic.

The children have taken this on board and work together to find new and imaginative ways to use the equipment. They are much more creative and inspired.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

All aspects of the Early Years curriculum can now be covered in our outdoor classroom. The Poddely Set is changed to suit all the ideas from the children and meet their interests. We incorporate the outdoor space into lessons and playtimes.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

We tried to ensure that the equipment we chose was flexible and could be adapted for many purposes related to our themes. The children have taken this on board and work together to find new and imaginative ways to use the equipment. They are much more creative and inspired.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

We discovered that the Drawing Wall, when wet, can be used to stick numbers and letters on. This has expanded the ways in which it can be used even more!
