Ysgol y Wern, Wales

Ysgol y Wern wanted to find a way to introduce more free flow play to their daily routine. However, they were worried that they wouldn’t be able to because of their shortage in space. They tell us how a new Poddely Set has solved their storage problems and enabled them to take part in flexible and imaginative play.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
We were looking for a way to introduce more free flow play into the curriculum but were lacking the space for static playground equipment. We wanted to find something that would enable us to move freely between the classroom and the playground but would work with the space we have available. We needed a flexible solution that would help make the playground an extension of the classroom

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
Our requirements were quite specific so we were concerned that we wouldn’t be able to find a supplier that could provide us with a solution. When we saw the Poddely Sets available from Playforce we knew it could be the ideal way to bring free flow play into our school. They are flexible and creative, inspiring play in any environment. Most importantly they come with their own Storage Pod that is easy to use, ideal for schools without much space.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The Poddely Set is unpacked any time we want to take part in imaginative and creative play inside or outside. We use it during lessons to build easels for mark making or to demonstrate water flow in science. At play times the children can create whatever their imaginations will allow – we’ve seen everything from houses to castles, cars to spaceships.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
Using the Poddely Sets in lessons and at play times requires the children to tap into their problem solving skills. By working together to find new ways to use the contents, we have seen a big improvement in their approach to new challenges with Poddely and in other areas of the curriculum. Their creative and imaginative thinking is always being tested and it’s fantastic to see this reflected in their academic subjects. We can’t wait to see what else they create.
Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
You don’t need much space to encourage free flow play at your school. The Poddely Set is easy to set up and can be packed away at the end of the day with no fuss. It’s simple to move the set between the classroom and the playground so there’s no excuse for not heading outside at any opportunity.
