Yardley Hastings Primary School, Northamptonshire

As part of the Olympic Legacy, Yardley Hastings Primary School wanted to develop their playground into a fun space for active and healthy play. They tell us how their new equipment has improved exercise and attitudes.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
Our playground was in need of some inspiration and as part of the Olympic Legacy, we were able to develop it to be better for active and outdoor play. We wanted to encourage our pupils to make the transition from play to sport whilst enjoying active play and developing a range of physical skills. We felt that providing them with a safe and creative space to be active, we could improve their attitudes towards exercise.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
The play equipment available from Playforce gets the balance just right. It inspires active and healthy play, provides a range of skill development and makes exercise fun. We thought there was a fantastic selection of products and, with so much choice, we were able to pick and choose the perfect selection for our outdoor space. The team was knowledgeable and passionate, their experience made it easy for them to help us create an amazing playground.

The new outdoor space has changed the children’s attitudes towards sport and exercise. They were all inspired by the Olympics last year and this has enabled us to keep that motivation going.
How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
We wanted our playground to be the centre of sport in our school so during lessons we show the children how they can develop a range of skills at their own pace. The Active Trail has play activities for all ages and abilities and the Solar Powered Stop Clock means that we can add an element of healthy competition to the routine. At break times the trail is free for children to explore themselves. They can practice what they learnt in class and work on improving their personal bests.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The new outdoor space has changed the children’s attitudes towards sport and exercise. They were all inspired by the Olympics last year and this has enabled us to keep that motivation going. School sports and active time are no longer met with a groan, the children can’t wait to get outside and on the equipment. We’ve seen an impressive improvement in their physical skills and even the least confident pupils are getting involved and active.
Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
We found that variety was the key to creating our perfect playground. The Active Trail contains a great combination of activities to develop a range of skills and to suit all levels of fitness and confidence. Add a little competition with a stop clock and the children start striving to do better than last time.
