In Sevenoaks, Weald Community Primary School have undergone a huge school transformation. Part of this was redeveloping their old, outdated playground. They tell us how their new outdoor space has given their Early Years children the opportunity to enjoy the playground during lessons and play time.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our whole school site is undergoing a phased re-development and improving our playground was part of this huge project. The old playground facilities were very outdated and were in need of a re-vamp. Our full school project has been the perfect opportunity to do something different with our playground and make it into an inspiring and exciting outdoor space.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We had worked with Playforce on a previous occasion and had been impressed with their customer service and friendliness. As our project was a large one, it was inevitable that things would change during the process. The team at Playforce proved very helpful and accommodating when alterations were made to the plans.

There was always someone to talk to during the process and we felt like we were involved in all aspects of the design and build stages.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The space is currently being used primarily by our Early Years students. They are using the outdoor space for both learning and play. It’s a space that can be both incorporated into our curriculum for taking lessons outside but also a place where the younger children can enjoy free, fun, outdoor play.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children have been thrilled with the new and exciting play and learning opportunities provided. The varied, versatile and colourful equipment has proved extremely popular with all of the students. It’s a pleasure to see them all having fun in a new space and taking on new challenges physically, mentally and socially.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

We’re still in the early days of exploring our playground but we’re very excited to see how it will come into daily use. We’re hoping that the children will enjoy the whole playground during lessons and at play times.
