Thorngumbald Primary School, Yorkshire

Outdoor learning and educational play are combined in the new playground development at Thorngumbald Primary School.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

As a new Headteacher I wanted to launch the development of the site in spectacular fashion by providing high quality playground equipment for the KS2 pupils. At Thorngumbald Primary School we believe that it is really important to ensure that children have an environment that suits every lively and peaceful moment. This is something we hoped to create with a new playground development.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce have a fantastic reputation for their high quality products and we were impressed with their service throughout the project. The team were enthusiastic and helpful from planning to installation and we always on hand for any queries.

It’s great to see the children playing so imaginatively now. They love to set themselves challenges as they progress along the play equipment and work together to come up with competitions and games.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We wanted to ensure that the outdoor space had different areas where the children could go, depending on their mood. We have planned the playground so that there is equipment, such as the Timber Trail, where the pupils can test their strength and a zone where they can relax and play board games. We try to incorporate the play areas into the academic day and encourage the children to take their learning outside.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

It’s great to see the children playing so imaginatively now. They love to set themselves challenges as they progress along the play equipment and work together to come up with competitions and games. The pupils are very enthusiastic about being outdoors and enjoy all aspects of the new playground.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

When planning our playground we tried to think about the different skills the children would be able to develop. Keeping this in mind we chose equipment that challenged physical, mental and emotional skills as well as encouraged them to be interactive and cooperative. Giving the children a well-rounded range of equipment will help create a happier, healthier environment.
