The Outside Chance

The Outside Chance pub, is an English pub in the picturesque village of Manton, near Marlborough, Wiltshire.  Popular with locals as well as visitors to the village, the outside area of the pub was in need of a refurbishment. In particular the pub chain wanted to make this pub even more child-friendly.  They were keen to have an outside space, a short walk from the Primary School, where parents could ‘pop in’ on their way home.  In particular they wanted to make sure the space was suitable for younger children, aged between two and five.

Rather like the other scheme we worked on (The Who’d A Thought It), when they approached Playforce they had lots of ideas.  They also spoke to local people, in the village, to find out what they wanted – consulting with parents and even children, to make sure they got it just right.

They listened to what we wanted to achieve and worked with us to make the very best of a relatively small amount of outdoor space.
Following several consultations with our outdoor grounds experts, we put forward some initial designs.  These were refined and developed, with our consultants making suggestions for the ways they could use equipment to meet their objectives as well as working to their budget.

The new play area was open in time for the busy summer period and has been met with great positivity by parents and children alike.

Norman Taylor, who led the project for them, said: “The Outside Chance is my local pub, in the village where I live.  It was particularly important to me, with children at the school, that we got this one right.  We were delighted with Playforce’s consultative approach.  They listened to what we wanted to achieve and worked with us to make the very best of a relatively small amount of outdoor space.  Over the summer we saw a considerably larger number of people coming to the pub and enjoying this new space”.
