Studfall Primary School, Northamptonshire

The children at Studfall Primary School can challenge their physical abilities with their new playground development from Playforce.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We think it’s important to challenge the pupils at Studfall Primary School. Part of growing up is learning to test your strength, both physically and mentally, and to take a few risks. We wanted to develop a playground that allowed the children to do this in a safe and secure environment.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce has a fantastic philosophy about outdoor learning and the playground equipment that they design provides the perfect platform to exercise the children’s bodies and imaginations. Playforce provides the setting and that inspires the children to create the rest of the story.

After playing on the equipment for half an hour, the children have a new lease of energy for the rest of their classes

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

Our new outdoor learning environment is being used by the staff and pupils to add physical activity and imaginative play to the academic day. Playtime has become more fun for everyone and the children are using the equipment to develop their balancing, climbing, co-ordination and upper-body strength skills.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

After playing on the equipment for half an hour, the children have a new lease of energy for the rest of their classes. They are more attentive, motivated and imaginative in lessons and are generally benefiting from including exercise in their daily routine. We’re constantly being asked ‘When can we go back on the equipment?’.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

If there are a lot of pupils in the school that will be wanting to use the new equipment, organising a rota is a good idea. We have 16 classes who take it in turns to head out to the playground and it has taught them some important lessons in sharing. There are no squabbles over who gets to play and when, they are very sensible about it.
