Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our new school building opened in September 2008 and we saw it as a great opportunity to work with a ‘blank canvas’. We wanted to provide a new learning environment both inside and outside the building and give the children exciting spaces to explore and challenge themselves within. We wanted to move away from the traditional playground resources and provide opportunities that the children would respond to in a positive manner. A new playground development would make playtimes an imaginative time during which the children would be active.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce was quick to respond to our initial enquiry and the team provided good, professional advice and presented the school with a clear plan. The quality of the equipment is excellent; strong, durable and pleasing to look at. The work was carried out quickly and efficiently and the teams were very responsive to the school environment.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

The Foundation Stage and KS1 equipment is being used as an extension to curriculum outdoor provision. The KS2 equipment is mainly used during breaks and lunchtimes for imaginative and educational play. It’s so popular with the pupils that we have to ensure that it is used on a rota basis.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Since developing our new playgrounds we have had lots of positive play and happy pupils. The equipment has helped keep the children active and healthy and we have seen a great improvement in their behaviour. The parents have also responded very positively to the project because they can see it is an important investment in their children.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Ensure that you take the time to think about exactly what you want. Listen to the advice from the planning team as they are able to make suggestions from their experience in other schools. Don’t be afraid to choose challenging equipment as the pupils are very good at knowing their own limits. Make sure that you have placed risk assessments and safety rules from the start so that everyone can enjoy the equipment without harm.
