St Margaret’s Academy, Devon

A new storytelling and arts zone at St Margaret’s Academy in Torquay has provided a magical environment for the children to enjoy their surroundings and learn together. Bursar Mrs Nicki Rogers explains how the school worked with Playforce to design this new area of the playground.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to develop an area of our playground as a storytelling and arts zone. We felt it was important for us to try to engage the pupils outside of the classroom in these areas, in particular.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The key elements for choosing Playforce were the design and affordability. These are extremely important factors when a child’s safety is taken into account, as well as a school’s budget! The designs presented to us by our Outdoor Grounds Consultant, were beautiful and took into account both of these factors.

The atmosphere is especially useful when the children are told stories and it is a useful, and constructive, social area at playtimes.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The space is being used, at present, for storytelling and quiet play. The children love to sit on the Benches or in the Storyteller Chair and listen to or tell stories. So far, things have proven to be quite successful and it is something we would like to develop, in the future, to include some outdoor Musical Instruments.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children are able to use the area to sit and talk and to enjoy the magical quality of their environment. The atmosphere is especially useful when the children are told stories and it is a useful, and constructive, social area at playtimes.
