Ripponden Junior and Infant School

With parts of the existing play area not used by the children for health and safety concerns, Ripponden J&I School decided that it was time for a new play area. Desperate for a space that the children could enjoy, head teacher Lorraine Bamforth, spoke to Playforce.

Why did you want to develop your playground?
The existing playground was tired and there were parts of it that the children couldn’t access for safety reasons. I wasn’t happy with the existing design and layout, it was time for a new one!

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
The customer service! Playforce’s sales consultant Lizzy, listened to what we wanted, what our budget was and worked with us on that. After Lizzy’s initial visit, unlike many of the other providers who were very pushy and intense, she left us alone to consider our options.

I was reluctant to have a term time installation for health and safety reasons, but was swayed due to cost. I’m glad we did, it was brilliant!

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The trail is mainly used for playtimes, so the children have free play. There are a wide range of skills that can be developed, not only physical, but in terms of turn taking and sharing as well.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
They have fun! Their little faces are a joy to watch and they are loving their experience.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
I was reluctant to have a term time installation for health and safety reasons, but was swayed due to cost. I’m glad we did, it was brilliant! The children (and adults!) loved watching the progress and it was a really good teaching tool to discuss keeping safe around building sites.

Any other comments about your experience of working with Playforce?
The installation team were great. We had a term time install and the children loved watching the men at work. They ripped out and reinstalled within 3 days - never stopping. They were polite, courteous and friendly to the children and adults, and left the playground clean, tidy and secure after the job.
