Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our old outside area was tired and inaccessible during a large part of the year as a result of adverse weather conditions. This meant that opportunities for physical development and fun were very limited. We wanted to create an outdoor space that could be used by the staff and pupils of The Reddings all year round and would enhance the children’s learning and play.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We have developed an exciting and vibrant outdoor space that inspires and motivates the children to get involved in learning and play. Our playground development is being used to increase the children’s engagement in physical activity, as well as to incorporate the natural environment into their academic routine.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Our children are now able to access a mixture of goal orientated and non-prescriptive equipment all year round. This means that there are countless opportunities for development and a number of new challenges that allow learners to become much more actively engaged.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

It’s important to work closely with the people who are going to be using the playground. Ensure that the staff and pupils have been given the opportunity to express their ideas and desires. This way you are certain to develop a space that is enjoyed by everyone.
