Long Marton Primary School, Cumbria

Long Marton Primary School wanted to develop their old, run down playground into a fun outdoor space where the children could work and play together to improve a range of skills. Headteacher Rachel Smith tells us how the new playground is used by everyone for creative and active play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our playground was old and depleted. The last time it had been redevelopment was over fifteen years ago and bits were being removed as they broke. We decided that our outdoor space needed a complete renovation and we wanted to develop the early years area.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

School budgets can be difficult and the prices at Playforce are great value for money. The equipment is such high quality that we know it will last a long time at our school. The friendliness of the team made it obvious that we were working with experienced professionals and they were really keen to get the whole school involved.

The children have gained a lot of confidence and skills by being able to challenge themselves and each other. They are now all occupied at break times and this has resulted in a lot less behaviour problems. It’s fantastic to see children of all ages, from 3 to 11, enjoying the space together.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The Early Years pupils are using the space for drawing, water play and physical development. The stage is a great place for creative performances and the rest of the equipment is used to improve problem solving skills and to carry out speed challenges.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children have gained a lot of confidence and skills by being able to challenge themselves and each other. They are now all occupied at break times and this has resulted in a lot less behaviour problems. It’s fantastic to see children of all ages, from 3 to 11, enjoying the space together.
