Beckmead School, Kent

The children at Beckmead School were able to start the new school year with a fantastic playground. Principal Jonty Clarke tells us how the equipment is encouraging outdoor learning and educational play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to provide the children at Beckmead School with a playground where they could challenge themselves. It’s really important that children take a few risks while they’re learning and having a safe and fun environment to do it in is essential. We decided to create an outdoor space where the children would be able to play, explore and learn.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce came highly recommended to the school and we were really pleased with the service. The team worked hard to ensure that our installation would take place during the summer holidays, this meant that it caused no interruptions to our academic year. They kept us informed of their plans at every stage and were always on the other end of the phone.

We are very impressed with the way the children have used the new equipment. [The Children] have been incredibly imaginative and creative.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

We’ve chosen, with the help of Playforce, a great range of play equipment that challenges the children both mentally and physically. We encourage the pupils to make up their own games and competitions and try to incorporate the playground into lessons. At Beckmead School we understand the importance of introducing more outdoor learning into the school day and this new playground is the perfect way to do it.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

We are very impressed with the way the children have used the new equipment. They have been incredibly imaginative and creative. Spending some time in the playground at lunch gives them the motivation and inspiration for a great afternoon of lessons.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Co-ordinating our build with the summer holidays was really beneficial for the school. It gave the children something to look forward to coming back for and didn’t cause any disruptions.
