Barleyhurst Park Primary School, Buckinghamshire

The pupils at Barleyhurst Park Primary School bounce back into the classroom after playing in their new playground. Headteacher Wendy Smith tells us how it has improved their motivation and creativity.
Why did you want to develop your playground?

We are fortunate enough at Barleyhurst Park Primary to have school grounds that include a big grassy field. Previously the children have been using the field to run around or to play sports but we felt that it was lacking inspiration for other exercise. Developing a new playground that introduced new equipment to the field would allow the children to take part in a much bigger variety of active and creative play.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

It was evident from the very beginning that Playforce had the extensive experience necessary to create the perfect playground for Barleyhurst Park Primary. The team were able to draw up designs and plans that suited our budget without sacrificing any of our needs. We were advised from looking through the brochure right through to the after-care check-ups, this gave us the confidence that we were in very safe hands.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

The new equipment is being incorporated into both playtimes and lessons. Although we encourage the children to try certain games and activities, they are brilliant at organising new ways to play by themselves. The stop clock allows them to set up challenges, whether they want to beat their own records on the equipment or their friend’s.
What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Before we had the new playground installed the children would return from lunch time a little bored and restless. Now they bounce back into the classrooms full of inspiration and motivation for the rest of the day. They are more creative and imaginative and look forward to getting outside and exercising.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Make the most of the space you do have available and ensure that everyone gets to share their ideas. Once the equipment is installed, give the pupils the encouragement they need to get started and then leave them to it!
