Abbey Gate College, Cheshire

The pupils at Abbey Gate College are learning and playing in the great outdoors thanks to their new playground equipment. Headteacher Rebecca Findlay tells us how they are developing a great range of skills outside.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to create an outdoor space at Abbey Gate College where the pupils could challenge and develop their gross motor skills. Our old playground was lacking any challenge and entertainment for the pupils and we wanted to ensure they good spend good quality time outdoors.

What were they key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The quality of Playforce equipment is fantastic. It is vibrant, exciting and inspiring. We know that it is going to last long into our school’s future and provide pupils with a fun and creative space for years to come. The equipment is great value for money and the service was personal from start to finish.

Since installing the playground equipment we have seen great improvements in the pupils’ balance and gross motor skills.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We are using the solar paneled stop clock to help develop mathematics skills through play. The equipment is being used by the children for both imaginative play and to develop their physical skills. We have a great balance of outdoor learning and educational play throughout the school day.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Since installing the playground equipment we have seen great improvements in the pupils’ balance and gross motor skills. We have also seen the less confident pupils begin to shine as they work together to find new and exciting ways to use the equipment.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Getting a good combination of play and learning is the best way to make the most of the equipment. We turn maths and science into games that can all be enjoyed in the great outdoors.
