New Playground Equipment Lifts Spirits at Thorneywood School

Just a few months after watching fire destroy almost a third of their facilities, pupils at Thorneywood Education Base, Nottingham, were delighted with the installation of new playground equipment.

They are already getting to grips with the challenging assault-course style timber trail designed by one of the country's leading providers of school playground equipment, Playforce.

Headmaster of Thorneywood Education Base, David Staveley, said: "The new playground equipment has given the children an important psychological lift after they witnessed, first hand, the devastating effect of a fire here in December and the subsequent demolition of one third of the building including all their indoor play equipment facilities."

Thorneywood is a specialist education unit based in the St Ann's area of Nottingham. It is part of the Nottingham City Children's Services Hospital and Home Education Referral Unit.

Award-winning Playfore prides itself on designing play ground equipment to develop and stretch children's physical, emotional, social, imaginative and behavioural skills, whilst being fun to use.

The timber trail created for Thorneywood is geared towards the primary-aged pupils who also played a part in choosing the individual obstacles to include in the timber trail.

It is a linear timber trail that has balancing beams, pull-up bars, a scramble net and climbing panel, swinging rope logs and various stepping posts.

Mr Staveley said: "We wanted a, fun outdoor play area for the children and that is exactly what we have. Both staff and pupils think it's great. Its fulfilling all the functions the Playforce consultant promised it would."
