Playground Equipment has Huge Impact at Laburnum Lower School

New playground equipment at a Bedfordshire school is having a huge impact on pupils. The school's head teacher, Janice Pibworth, said, since the outdoor play equipment was installed, the development of the children's physical and creative skills was quite extraordinary.

"We expected the outdoor play equipment to be popular with the children and enhance their enjoyment of play times, but it has been even more successful than we anticipated," said Mrs Pibworth of Laburnum Lower School, Sandy.

The playground equipment chosen by the school was provided by Playforce, one of the country's leading creators of school playground equipment. It was designed specifically for children in the early years foundation stage of their education - nursery and reception classes - and includes a colourful low-level bridge with shaped holes in the sides and a climbing tower with climbing wall, scramble net, fireman's pole and interactive play boards.

"It's so good, not just for the physical challenges but also for the creativity it stimulates," said Mrs Pibworth. "Using the playground equipment has made the children grow in confidence and ability, not just when playing but in all their school activities.

"It's very visible and the message it sends out to parents and future parents is fantastic, an added bonus. Lots of people have commented on how colourful, cheerful and bright it is. We like to think it's a reflection of what goes on inside the school!"

Wiltshire-based Playforce is an award-winning company dedicated to designing playground equipment that supports learning and develops children's minds and bodies through fun.

Playforce outdoor play equipment areas stimulate children's imaginations and improve social behaviour at the same time as stretching muscles and ability. The children create their own games and magical worlds using the timber trail obstacles as props and scenery.

Mrs Pibworth explained that she was also particularly pleased with the Playforce workforce for the way they installed the playground equipment around established trees and made alterations to accommodate disabled access and ensure playground equipment safety.

"The only slight problem with this new equipment is that the older children - years 1 to 4 - are not allowed to use it and they are very envious," said Mrs Pibworth. "As a result we have already started discussions with Playforce about what we can do in their outdoor playground."
