An Outdoor Playground with a Breath of Fresh Air for Local Children at Hanham Abbots Junior School
Playtimes at a Bristol junior school have an added attraction since the addition of seating
underneath trees in the outdoor playground.
Even through the cold winter months, the children at Hanham Abbots Junior School, Creswick Avenue, have made the most of the new playground equipment, which was installed by Playforce, the country's premier provider of school playground equipment.
The youngsters use the seats as a place to chat quietly, as a meeting place, a place to eat outside, a place to sit and reflect, or watch the others playing.
"It's all part of the Government's healthy schools initiative and about encouraging the children to get out in the fresh air." explained Mary Petela, the school's support teacher who organised the project.
"The children identified the need for somewhere to sit outside years ago during a school council meeting but for one reason or another, although they kept bringing the matter up, we never got round to fitting them. Finally, a few months ago, we were awarded a grant from the local council and then the PTA raised the rest of the money.
"They have already made a huge difference and we are expecting them to have an even bigger impact in the summer."
