West Rainton Primary School

With part of the play area developed in 2016, Alison McDonough tells us how their now completed outdoor area is being used to deliver outdoor learning and educational play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?
We took over the nursery from private providers in September 2016 and the outdoor area was in desperate need of a facelift. We had half of the area developed in 2016 and this project was to complete it giving our 2-4 yr olds the best possible outdoor learning experiences.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
Quality, safety and durability of products. The pre and post-care service is also of an incredibly high standard without ever being pushy. The whole team works with the school as a partner/adviser rather than sales people.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The outdoor areas in our EYFS spaces are used to gather evidence on child-initiated role play, physical development, problem solving and communication skills. Every area was covered and the children come up with endless ingenious ideas to utilize the space and equipment.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
Developing resilience, risk awareness, physical development and social communication skills.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
The development of a high-quality outdoor space which is overlooked by a busy main route through our village, has increased our number of pupils in the school. Often when enquiring about pupil places, families are commenting on how exciting, welcoming and happy the nursery looks from the outside.
