The Jolly Farmers, Surrey

As part of a big refurbishment, The Jolly Farmers wanted to reinvent their pub garden into an interactive space for the whole family. They tell us how their new Active Trail has helped make the establishment more family-friendly and entertaining.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
We’re more than just a pub at The Jolly Farmers, we’re also a deli and a farm shop, a café and a lounge. We’ve been attracting more and more families and we wanted to provide the children with a fun space for them to play in whilst their parents relax or shop. We wanted to include a variety of activities so that it would be the parents having to drag the children away!

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
A lot of other providers we looked at weren’t sure how to develop a playground for a pub garden but Playforce was excited by the challenge. They worked with us to create a playground that would be suitable for a range of ages and abilities but also sit nicely with the pub surroundings, next to our kitchen garden and fruit trees. It needed to fit with the British pub theme but still be vibrant and exciting.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The playground is a huge hit with the local children and parents no longer have to worry about keeping them entertained while they enjoy themselves. It’s a brilliant space for encouraging active play, the parents love that it inspires the children to exercise. It has helped out pub become a much more family-friendly place, it’s a whole day out for parents and children now.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The variety of activities within the Active Trail keep the children entertained for hours. They love challenging themselves on the obstacles and parents have said it motivates them to look for more places where they can enjoy outdoor play. It has also been a great way to encourage children to look around our kitchen garden. We love to see budding gardeners looking through our herbs and fruit trees.
Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
Pub gardens have the opportunity to offer so much more than a rusty swing set. By giving children a fun and entertaining outdoor space, pubs can keep them busy for longer and help make the garden more family-friendly. You’ll have families staying all day!
