New Moston Primary School, Lancashire

The children at New Moston Primary School are enjoying climbing, investigating, learning and playing in their new playground.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
Our playground was just a barren space, and the lack of equipment was having a negative impact on pupils behaviour. Without constructive things for them to do at playtimes the children managed to find all sorts of ‘mischief’ to get up to. In fact our OFSTED report from April 2011 commented that ‘Whilst behaviour in lessons is good, it is satisfactory at unstructured times of the day’.

The main benefits are the children are now fully engaged with activities at playtimes and therefore the amounts of incidents of undesirable behaviour have drastically reduced.
What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
We asked 3 companies to design a playground and took the designs to the school council to see which one they preferred. The Playforce design really captured their imagination and was the clear winner with the children.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The main benefits are the children are now fully engaged with activities at playtimes and therefore the amounts of incidents of undesirable behaviour have drastically reduced. This has a knock on effect for learning as the children are coming into lessons happy and refreshed, as opposed to previously when we could spend learning time sorting out playtime incidents and some children were still angry during lesson times because of perceived injustices at playtime.
