Why did you want to develop your playground?
We decided that we wanted to change the set-up of our playground and organise it into zones for different aspects of learning. We wanted to create an outdoor space that would encourage pupils to develop a range of physical, creative and communicative skills, all whilst having fun in a natural environment.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
The equipment available from Playforce stood out to us in terms of quality and creativity. We spoke to our School Grounds Consultant about how we wanted to develop our space and they helped us choose equipment to suit each of the zones. It is evident from their years of experience that the designs are created to improve and encourage outdoor learning and play. We knew that we were working with experts.

Moving some lessons outdoors has improved the children’s attention spans and interests. The variety in their routine has given them motivation to develop their imaginative and creative skills.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The zones that we have created in our new playground development allow us to take a range of learning outside. We have an area for story telling, a space for active play and some equipment to inspire imaginative play. During lessons we can have more than one class learning outside without disturbing each other. At play times some of the children can get active and noisy in one zone while others have a more peaceful time in another.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

During class we have noticed that they are more interested in getting involved and at play times we have seen the more confident pupils work with the others to get the best out of the equipment.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
We have felt that breaking the playground down into zones has given us more options for outdoor learning and play. It means that we can have several activities taking place at once and the children don’t have to wait as long for their turn. The variety also allows pupils to develop a range of skills, we’ve been surprised how many ways the children have benefited from the equipment.
