Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to improve our playground with more outdoor play and give our pupils the opportunity to challenge their physical skills in a natural environment. We decided to purchase new play equipment that was designed to help children develop their skills socially and physically, all in a safe space and whilst, most importantly, having plenty of fun.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce understood exactly what we were looking for and the team helped us go through all of the choices to find the right combination for our school grounds. They included us at all stages of the process and even got the children involved in designing the space. They were friendly and helpful – it was clear that they had years of experience working with schools, teachers, parents and pupils.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

Now that we have a shelter in our playground we can deliver outdoor learning whatever the weather. It keeps the sunshine off our backs in the summer and gives us a hide away from the rain in spring, it allows us to incorporate the great outdoors into our curriculum all year round. At play times the Woodland Tower comes to life. The children challenge themselves and each other on the active equipment and develop their physical skills at their own pace.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

With more ways than ever to play and learn outside, our pupils are reaping the benefits of the great outdoors. The Woodland Tower has inspired the children to take part in more active play and they can work together to develop a range of skills. Breaking up the daily routine with more activities outdoors has boosted motivation and productivity, they return to the classroom full of energy.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Choosing natural equipment that fits in with the school surroundings can help children find ways to play outside the playground. Nature is there to be explored and instilling a good attitude towards play from a young age will keep them adventurous and inquisitive.
