Knowsley Lane Primary School, Merseyside

The playground in Knowsley Lane Primary School in Liverpool was in place but unsafe and did not meet children’s needs. Early Years Co-ordinator, Emma Dilworth, wanted an outdoor learning space that would enhance the children's learning opportunities.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

- Listening to our requirements and wishes.
- The quality of the equipment.
- Taking the time to understand what we wanted, even when we were a little unsure ourselves.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The space is used to maximise nursery and reception children’s learning and play opportunities. The areas within the provision have been well designed to support the EYFS curriculum and help children to develop the characteristics of an effective learner.

The sheer delight on their faces when they are in the area. They love the opportunity to be outside. Their imaginations are developing because the resources provide numerous opportunities for open ended role play.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The sheer delight on their faces when they are in the area. They love the opportunity to be outside. Their imaginations are developing because the resources provide numerous opportunities for open ended role play. They are learning to co-operate and consider other children’s needs. We can’t wait to get the soil in the beds and begin to grow our own food.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

It is important to consider the whole area and what you want the outcomes to be when you are in the planning stages.

Any other comments about your experience of working with Playforce?

The knowledge and honesty from our designer was very helpful. He was able to suggest why some things wouldn’t work and how best to add interest to the area. It was very important that we had an outdoor space that had a natural element about it. We didn’t want to create just a playground. We wanted a space where children could experience and learn from being outside.
