Knaphill School, Surrey

The old playground at Knaphill School needed more space for play. Headteacher Kevin Davies tells us how the new additions to their play zone has given pupils the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities in the great outdoors.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
We wanted to provide the children at Knaphill School with additional play equipment and to enhance their playground environment. We also wanted to give our school something extra special that would improve the appeal of the school to new parents.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
The quality of the Playforce designs is extremely high and their communication was excellent from the start. They responded to our ideas and developed them to match all of the needs and wants of the school. Their 2D and 3D plans were great and the children loved seeing them all come to life.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
Since installing the new playground equipment we have been able increase the number of children who can use the play zone at any one time from 30 to 90. This has given us the opportunity to encourage a variety of play activities and allow children of all ages to find new ways to use the equipment together.
What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The new equipment has been a huge attack on playground boredom! The children really enjoy going outside and having the chance to spend time with their friends. The new challenges have helped them develop a range of skills and add variety to the school day.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?
It’s really important to get the children involved at all stages. Looking at the match between their wants, the plan and the finished result is fantastic.
