Higham St. John’s Primary School, Lancashire

The older children at Higham St. John’s Primary School were lacking a space where they could take on a challenge. A new playground development has been the perfect opportunity to improve their outdoor learning and educational play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our previous playground at Higham St. John’s was lacking space and this was often leading to collisions. The younger children had an adventure playground but it was far too basic for the junior children. We wanted to develop a playground that would give the older children a bigger challenge and would therefore benefit their development.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The key element that made Playforce stand out to us was the the great range of products and equipment they have available. Everything is of high quality and designed to enhance children’s learning and play. Playforce also has a good guarantee period and the planning service provided is excellent.

Our new playground has provided a fresh and exciting challenge for the junior children. We have seen a great improvement in both their physical and academic development and they are much more motivated in the classroom.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

Primarily our Trim Trail was being used for play but more recently we have been looking into using it as part of outdoor and adventurous play. We want to use the equipment to develop problem solving and teamwork skills in the near future.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Our new playground has provided a fresh and exciting challenge for the junior children. We have seen a great improvement in both their physical and academic development and they are much more motivated in the classroom. The older boys have particularly benefited from the equipment as they have a way to ‘let off steam’ without the fear of them being rough with other pupils.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Consider how the equipment can be incorporated into the academic day but make sure there is still a difference between lesson time and play time. Find new ways of using the playground, or encourage the children to think of them, so that there is always a fresh challenge to face.
