Green Lane Primary School, Surrey

Green Lane Primary School have developed their playground to encourage outdoor learning and educational play.
The children at Green Lane Primary School are enjoying their new outdoor space where they can learn about their environment and test out their physical skills.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

At Green Lane Primary School we have some great grounds but we weren’t making the most of the space we had available. We wanted to be able to extend our pupils’ learning outside of the classroom and encourage them to take part in more educational and active play. Developing a new playground that incorporated a range of inspiring equipment was the perfect solution.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We wanted to develop our outdoor space to allow more opportunities for learning outside, in all weathers, and Playforce provided all the equipment we needed. The team were able to provide us with a shopping list of equipment within our price range that we could mix-and-match until we found the best combination for our school.

The children love their new playground. They are able to use the ‘huts’ in a variety of imaginative ways and the climbing equipment has helped them to build their confidence and skills.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

At Green Lane Primary School, the children can now take part in outdoor learning and educational play as part of their daily, academic routine. We have used the space to teach them a range of different skills and help them develop themselves physically and socially. The planters are particularly popular as the children love to work together to decide what to plant where and attempt to identify the flowers.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children love their new playground. They are able to use the ‘huts’ in a variety of imaginative ways and the climbing equipment has helped them to build their confidence and skills. The shelter has been a huge benefit too. Whatever the weather the children love being outside and this has enabled them to choose where they want to learn come rain or shine.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Be bold when choosing your equipment. One of the most important parts of childhood is to take risks and for children to learn things for themselves. All of the equipment is safe so let the pupils explore every inch of them.
