George Spicer Primary School, Middlesex

Challenging climbing frames, seating areas, and award-winning Poddely created the perfect KS2 play area at George Spicer Primary School.  According to one child it was “better than Disneyland”… We’ll take that!

School Business Manager, Esther Campbell, tells us why it has made such a difference to the children and the way learning is taken outside.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
Lots of things have been changing here at George Spicer Primary School.  Recently we’ve moved onto a split site.  This means that Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are now separated and we have to think more creatively about how we use our outdoor space.  To start with this is was a bit of a challenge because we needed KS2 appropriate equipment, for the first, time in a dedicated KS2 only site.  But, with Playforce’s help we started to see the benefits of being able to really tailor things.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The most obvious thing that made Playforce stand out was the quality of their equipment.  Not only was it really excellent and imaginatively designed, it was tailored to the exact needs our KS2 pupils have.  The equipment offered was far superior than other products on the market.

In addition we loved working with them.  From the first enquiry we found the Playforce team to be professional.  From start to finish and the work was carried out ‘to plan’ and delivered on time. We’re extremely happy that we chose Playforce to work with us on redesigning our KS2 playground.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The two challenging climbing frames (the Quadruple Woodland Tower and Active Climber 7) that we chose are specially designed, by Playforce, to enable the use of upper body strength and test the climbing agility of our children.  What we love the most is that they allow the children to learn about how they can use all the space available - whether underneath or above.  Also, the seating and play resources below the towers mean that there isn’t any wasted space.  Our new playground is multi-purpose.

Also, we love the opportunities that Poddely presents.  Because it’s flexible it allows each class to use it in ways that suit their learning outcomes – whether that is for imaginative play, with the towers for active play or even taking creative drawing outside.  We don’t think the children are ever going to get bored of it!
What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The children love the opportunities they have for using the frames, both during the day and at After School clubs. One of our students even said; ‘This is better than Disneyland!’  We couldn’t ask for a better result!
