outstanding outdoor spaces

Fitzjohns Primary School, London

Fitzjohn’s Primary School in London wanted to create a safe outdoor learning environment where the children could thrive. Headteacher Rob Earrey tells us how their new playground has encouraged the pupils to combine outdoor learning with educational play to stimulate their imagination.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our old playground at Fitzjohn’s lacked inspiration for the children and didn’t have any activities that developed motor skills. The outside environment has a huge influence on play and is particularly important for the development of boys. That’s why we wanted to create a safe and fun outdoor space where the children could thrive. We also wanted to develop the playground into a combined space for the Nursery and Reception class to play in together.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce has a much more practical approach than most other providers. They, like us, want to get children outside to learn and play. The equipment that they offer allows children to be imaginative and it can be used in a variety of different ways. The layout that the team designed with us means that there is space for other activities and bike riding, alongside the equipment. Of the different providers we looked at, Playforce had the most appealing products and service.

The children adore the playground. They have become more productive with their time spent outside and they are initiating play with each other.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

The playground is being used by the whole school to stimulate learning and to bring some imagination to play times. We were really pleased to see how the children are using the equipment to develop their confidence. Products such as the fireman’s pole and the climbing wall are encouraging children to try something new and different. Having the extra space for other activities allows us to balance outdoor learning and educational play.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children adore the playground. They have become more productive with their time spent outside and they are initiating play with each other. It’s lovely to see the Reception and Nursery classes working and playing together – the older children love to show the younger ones how to use the equipment.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

It is essential to create a safe, enclosed space that looks very appealing to the staff and children. Giving the children a stimulating environment really encourages them to be imaginative and productive.
