outstanding outdoor spaces

Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School, Merseyside

At Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School, music lessons now have some extra natural inspiration. They tell us how their new playground means they can make as much noise as they want or have some quiet around their favourite tree.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
We love music lessons at Corpus Christi and we wanted to find a way to encourage children to practice their tunes, come rain or shine. They love using the outdoors as musical inspiration so we decided to develop a space in the playground where they could unleash their inner musician and not disturb the other classes nearby. Whilst we were developing the space, we also wanted to include an area for pupils that want some peace and quiet and a place to chat, away from the busy playground.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
As soon as we saw the Music Panels available from Playforce, we knew that they were the perfect solution for our space. They are fun, inspirational and look great in the playground – we knew that the children would love them. The team was helpful from the very first phone call and we felt as though we were in safe hands throughout the process and afterwards.

We are able to use the Music Panels during music lessons to teach children about sound and rhythm. It’s great because they can make as much noise as they want and we don’t need to worry about them disturbing other classes nearby.
How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
We are able to use the Music Panels during music lessons to teach children about sound and rhythm. It’s great because they can make as much noise as they want and we don’t need to worry about them disturbing other classes nearby. They can practice the things they’ve learnt, when it comes to play times and we love hearing them practice. The Tree Seat has been the perfect place for the children to sit and talk away from the noise. It’s a natural setting for lunch but it’s also helpful for those slightly less confident children, who just want a quiet place to sit.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The children are much more enthusiastic about getting outside and the natural surroundings have inspired them musically and in other lessons too. It’s a creative and fun space – the option to have noisy or quiet time has helped stop a lot of arguments. Their communication skills have developed and so has their confidence.
Can you share any practice insights you have gained?
Having the option to take our music lessons outdoors has helped add some variety to the school day. It breaks up the routine and this has really inspired the pupils. It’s important that children also have the option of some downtime and providing them with a space for some peace and quiet can help ensure they get it.
