outstanding outdoor spaces

Christ Church CE Primary School, Derbyshire

The children at Christ Church CE Primary School are enjoying playing and learning outdoors whatever the weather. Reception teacher Sorrel Morris from Christ Church CE Primary School tells us how their new playground has been used to make all areas of learning more fun.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our playground has been in need of development for a number of years and we knew that to have an impact on the outdoor space we needed to make a big investment that would change the way we use it. Ofsted had also identified that a development of the outdoor space was something that we needed to do.

What were they key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Before beginning our outdoor space development, we received quotes from a number of different companies. Playforce stood out as having a good knowledge of good foundation practice and of the areas of learning. Other companies showed us their brochures and told us what they could provide but Playforce listened to our thoughts and needs and talked about the areas of learning before showing us possible products to suit our specifications.

We now have designated areas of learning that the children use for specific things such as the storytelling chair, painting, numeracy and model making.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We use our outdoor space all the time. It’s used for group work, whole class teaching and independent learning. We also use it for stories, role-play, sand and water investigative work, story telling, music – the list goes on.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

A big difference has been that the children have been able to set up the outdoor space and tidy the equipment away. We now have designated areas of learning that the children use for specific things such as the storytelling chair, painting, numeracy and model making.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Adding outdoor cushions to the wigwam has made it into a magical space for group work, story telling, teaching and a shelter away from the weather. We’ve placed cards with photographs of the equipment in each area with the children’s names next to them to help make set up of the equipment quick and easy. All the children know where to get the resources from and how to set them up.
