Brookvale Primary School, Warwickshire

The extra fun and games inspired by a new timber trail at Brookvale Primary School has had a positive impact on the whole of school life.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Outside space is not a premium at Brookvale Primary School but we wanted to develop a playground that would make the most of the grounds we do have available. As a school we pride ourselves in making enjoyment a key part of learning and we are always looking for innovative ways to achieve this. Developing a new and exciting playground would be the perfect way to combine outdoor learning with educational play.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The staff at Playforce were excellent; professional and accommodating. The equipment that they design is of such high quality and it is clear that the team at Playforce is as passionate about fun as they are about the safety and well being of children. Playforce has worked with other schools, like us, who are aiming for a Healthy School Status so they knew exactly what we were looking for.

We have seen a big difference to the children’s behaviour during outdoor play times.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

With the help of Playforce we have developed a timber trail made up of a number of physical challenges that exercise both the minds and bodies of the pupils. The children have found some extremely interesting ways of using the equipment and we encourage them to release their imaginations as much as possible.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

We have seen a big difference to the children’s behaviour during outdoor play times. Before we had the equipment installed the children were becoming pent up and would misbehave to let off steam. Now that they have new ways get rid of excess energy, pupils of all ages are playing and learning together.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Encourage the children to get involved in the planning and design process. They are going to be the ones using the equipment so it’s important to ensure their needs are met. Don’t think that your school doesn’t have enough space for a playground development, Brookvale Primary is proof that you can do a lot with small grounds.
