Avishayes Primary School, Somerset

With fantastic school grounds to fill, Avishayes Primary School developed a new playground that would give their pupils an outdoor space in which to play and learn.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

The playground at Avishayes Primary School offered plenty of space for our 251 pupils but lacked any playtime challenge, excitement or play value. We wanted to explore ways of introducing more active play, inspire safe risk taking as well as improve fitness and well being. Developing a new playground allowed us to create unlimited opportunities for the children and meet each pupil’s needs.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

With Playforce there was no hard sell, the team were genuinely passionate about creating an outdoor learning environment for our school. They had an extremely professional approach, they were very efficient and keen to involve the children and staff at all stages. Playforce understands how to get the perfect balance of fun, education and safety whilst keeping to available space and budget.

The children adore their new playground and we’ve seen a great change in their attitude towards play time.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

The pupils designed their ‘dream playground’ and we used these plans to create our outdoor space. Our range of equipment has been selected to encourage physical activity and to teach the children to work together. We ensure that the children interact with the playground every day and help them think of new ways to use the equipment.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children adore their new playground and we’ve seen a great change in their attitude towards play time. They love to work in teams on the Timber Trail and test each other’s fitness levels or attempt to be an acrobat on the Trapeze Swing.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

We had a lot of space to fill at Avishayes Primary School which meant more equipment and more costs. Fundraising is essential for a big project like this and we were very successful at securing our budget with a combination of fundraising activities by the PTFA and support by the Somerset Play Forum and District Council.
