Annfield Plain Infant School

Space at Annfield Plain Infant School wasn’t the issue in this playground, it was the angle. Annfield Plain’s outdoor space is built on a slope and whenever the British weather made an appearance it would become muddy and unusable.
Why did you want to develop your playground?
Annfield Plain is an area with low employment, high percentage of smokers and levels of obesity. We wanted to promote an active, physical, healthy lifestyle from an early age and promote social skills.

Playforce had good communication and were helpful with planning and fundraising for a small school.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
Good communication and helpful with planning and fundraising for a small school.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
The children are happy to play outside in the fresh air. They are turn taking, communicating, developing social skills, fostering ideas using the area for role play as well as physical development.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
Developing confidence to have a go and be daring, playing together creatively, using the equipment to act out stories and things they have seen on TV.

How did the design deliver against your needs?

The design has taken into account the terrain. It is built on a hill and well thought out to develop gross motor skills, climbing.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

It is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. When a small school knows what they need/want but need to fundraise to achieve it. Which comes first?

Any other comments about your experience of working with Playforce?
