Ambler Children’s Centre, London

The Ambler Children’s Centre wanted to give their playground a spring clean in time for the summer. They tell us how a Play Store has helped them make more space to play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

Our playground needed a little spring-cleaning so we wanted to find something that would help us give our outdoor space a tidy up before the summer. We decided that we wanted to find a storage solution that would be multi-functional. That way we could make more room in our playground but also have a new way to inspire our pupils to play.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We were concerned that our requirements were very specific but Playforce ensured us that they had the perfect solution. The Large Play Store is filled with storage pods and shelving for all of our play equipment but also has some extras to make it fun. There is a fun shop counter for role play and the doors are covered in chalk boards – perfect for drawing and creative fun.

Since moving our play equipment inside the Play Store, the children have developed a sense of ownership and responsibility for what’s inside.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The Play Store is primarily used to keep our playground neat and tidy. We have shown the pupils where everything is stored so that they can help us set-up and tidy away any time we want to use the equipment inside. The children can use the shop counter for creative play at break times. They love using it for role play too. The chalk boards are particularly popular – we use them during classes to take some lesson activities outside.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Since moving our play equipment inside the Play Store, the children have developed a sense of ownership and responsibility for what’s inside. They know that if they want to play they have to help set-up and tidy away. It has boosted their motivation to be organised and tidy and has encouraged them to see everyday objects and spaces as places to explore.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Many schools in London are short for space so it’s important to find storage solutions that are multi-functional. That way you can make a new addition to your playground but still save space.
