It's Now Playtime for Everyone

Children from a special school in Chippenham are having extra fun enjoying a new accessible outdoor playground

All 73 pupils at St Nicholas Special School in Malmesbury road, can now take part in outdoor activities together.

Some of the children are in wheelchairs but the playground allows them to join their classmates on the play equipment, which includes swings, bridges, and percussion instruments.

Designed by Playforce the UK’ Premier provider of Playground Equipment for Schools, the outdoor playground cost £40,000 which was raised by the PTA and donated by local businesses.

Pupils between two and nineteen have been enjoying swings, one for wheel chair users and one for other pupils needing support.

There is also a wheelchair road with markings and a zebra crossing, a rumble roadway which creates noise and sensation for wheelchairs, a log forest, a rollover bridge, a wheelchair bridge, a pergola without seats and oversized outdoor playground percussion instruments.

Head Teacher Jill Owen said; the children love it. One young wheelchair user Sharon was in the special swing yesterday smiling all over her face.

The children cycle along and stop for each other at the zebra crossing and it’s great for learning co-operation and road safety skills
