Matilda or Charlie, Danny or James? Who will be your Roald Dahl hero this Friday? Schools and libraries across the country are getting excited today for this year’s Dahlicious Dress Up Day. This fun annual day sees thousands of children, parents, teachers and school staff pay £1.00 to dress up as their favourite Dahl characters, all in aid of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The charity raises funds to provide specialist nursing care and family grants for children living with serious, rare and undiagnosed conditions.

Good reasons to get involved
There are plenty of good reasons for primary schools to get involved – not least the FUN you’ll have seeing children and staff dressed as Oompa Loompas, Witches and Enormous Crocodiles, all for a great cause. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the much-loved books of one of our favourite children’s writers and the day provides a fantastic focus for literacy and creative skills whilst raising much-needed funds that will make a difference to children’s lives. From reading and story-telling, to costume design and performance, it’s easy to get involved with curriculum-linked activities. You’ll find everything your school community needs to know about Dahlicious Dress Up Day here, including teaching resources and lesson plans, fundraising advice and even dressing-up tips.

Fundraising ideas
If your school is keen to continue supporting Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity after Dahlicious Dress Up Day, there are lots of ways to help with fundraising tips available here.

From toadstools to storyteller chairs – check out our playground equipment!
Of course the perfect place to read those wonderfully creative stories on a mild autumn day is in a quiet, comfortable place outdoors – and we have plenty of those to offer in our Playforce Shop literacy range. Take this lovely timber Circle Time Chair and Seats Package or our Tipis and Dens for guided reading or small group literacy activities.

You can even get into character as The Witches to create magical spells with this Potion Pot Set or as Charlie to make ‘chocolate’ (well – mud!) with this Upcycled Mud Kitchen.  You could even write letters to the Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity telling them about all the fun you’ve had on Dahlicious Dress Up Day and post them in this bright red postbox.
