What can we spend our Sports & PE Premium on?

In our last blog we looked at what the Sports & PE Premium is and how it works. It’s fantastic if your school has received the funding, but how can you make the best of it? Here are some tips on what the Sports & PE Premium can be used for.

According to the Government, schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer. This means that you should use the premium to:

• develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers

• build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

You could use it to:

• provide staff with professional development, mentoring, training and resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively

• introduce new sports, dance or other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities

• support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports and holiday clubs

• encourage pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles that support sport and physical activity within the school

• embed physical activity into the school day through active travel to and from school, active playgrounds and active teaching

What about coaching? Although they can’t be responsible for the overall strategy, you can use your Primary PE and Sport Premium to employ external sports coaches. Coaches can perform a valuable role in supporting and upskilling teachers to improve the delivery of physical education and sport, as well as providing breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs.
